Leuchars Aerodrome, five miles from the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, is no longer available for private jet flights.
An airport controlled by the Royal Air Force just five miles from the famous golf links of St. Andrews, Scotland, is no longer available for private jet flights.
The Ministry of Defense has confirmed the news to a local newspaper.
The move came after “primary and secondary radars at the airfield were withdrawn from service.”
A MoD spokesperson told The National, “Consultation took place with all airspace stakeholders ahead of this change, and the small number of private air traffic can continue to use alternative locations.”
The base, located in Fife, was closed in 2015 to cut costs.
Several private jet company executives say the closure won’t have a significant impact.
Dundee Airport is located 15 miles from the golf mecca.
Edinburgh Airport is further, at 48 miles.
The Old Course at St Andrews has hosted the Open Championship 30 times since 1873.
It is the most frequent venue for the famed tournament.
However, the timing isn’t ideal.
The next Open Championship at St. Andrews will be next year.
The last time The Old Course hosted the Open Championship was 2022.
Australian golfer Cameron Smith won the Claret Jug.
The championship attracted over 290,000 spectators.
