Blade’s passenger helicopter business will become a division of eVTOL-maker Joby, retaining its well-known brand.
Blade Air Mobility, Inc. announced an agreement to sell its passenger division to Joby Aviation, Inc. for “up to $125 million.”
Both are publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
Blade’s Medical division will remain public.
It rebrands as Strata post-close.
Strata will then focus entirely on its growing contractual medical services and logistics business.
Per the announcement:
‘The divestiture of Blade’s passenger business includes operations in the US and Europe, lounges and terminals in key hubs, as well as the Blade brand. Operations will continue with the business functioning as a standalone entity within Joby upon closing.’
At the closing of the transaction, Rob Wiesenthal, Founder and CEO of Blade, will join Joby as CEO of Blade Air Mobility and will also serve as Chairman of the Board of Strata.
Blade’s Chief Financial Officer, Will Heyburn, and President and General Counsel, Melissa Tomkiel, will succeed Wiesenthal, serving as Co-CEOs of Strata while retaining their CFO and General Counsel roles, respectively.
Joby Aviation, Inc. is a California-based transportation company developing an all-electric, vertical take-off and landing air taxi.
Blade had previously dabbled in the by-the-seat private jet market, operating public charter shuttles between New York and Florida.
It also has a private jet on-demand charter business in addition to its well-known helicopter services.
Wiesenthal told CNBC’s Sqawk Box this morning that the quieter eVTOLs will unlock “exponential growth” for its urban mobility plans.
Flying Magazine reports, “Joby is developing the S4—a piloted, four-passenger eVTOL intended for short-hop trips, cruising at speeds up to about 200 miles per hour.”
Aviation International News reports a range for the Joby eVTOLs of around 100 miles.
In 2022, Delta Air Lines announced a $60 million investment in Joby.
In 2023, Delta Air Lines led a $500 million investment in Wheels Up.
Delta and Blade have partnered for integrated helicopter transfers at New York’s JFK Airport since 2017.
Back in 2021, Jet Linx had announced an eVTOL deal with Blade.
Another 2021 announcement linked Blade with rival Embraer-backed eVTOL maker Eve.
The transaction is expected to close “in the coming weeks.”
