The Fake Jet Card: The scam of wasting your time

Jet cards don’t always make sense. Companies that promote guaranteed jet cards but don’t really sell them are just stealing your time.

If time is money and your time has value, private jet charter brokers and operators that market guaranteed price jet cards on their websites when they don’t actually have them are, in essence, stealing, even if it is merely your time.

Jet cards, in which the flight provider guarantees you the ability to fly at a specific rate, particularly with guaranteed availability, are a primary reason consumers buy a jet card.

And yes, there is nothing wrong with dynamic pricing either via ad hoc charter or as part of a membership.

Dynamic pricing, of course, means the cost to fly changes each time you call.

It’s based on supply and demand.

Cancellation terms often vary from quote to quote as well.

That said, some companies advertise fixed-rate jet cards on their websites but don’t actually sell them.

For these companies, it’s just a game.

It’s a bait-and-switch.

The game is to get you to engage so they can sell you on booking flights using dynamic pricing.

Why?

That’s because guaranteeing pricing and availability means the provider is not guaranteed a profit on each flight.

With dynamic pricing, the broker can always make a margin by marking up the cost of buying a flight.

That’s not bad.

If you are an efficient flyer, you can often get better pricing.

That said, they are likely to have stricter cancellation terms.

You are also likely to have to pay extra for things like de-icing, which some jet cards include.

The same goes for Wi-Fi, which some jet cards include.

There are good reasons to use dynamic pricing.

There are good reasons to book charter flights ad hoc rather than join any program.

And jet cards often make sense.

You know your price.

You know the terms.

There is less time spent booking.

You don’t have to check the cancellation terms with every quote.

Why would a company market a product that they don’t offer?

They know that many consumers want guaranteed pricing and guaranteed availability.

Our research shows flyers want guaranteed pricing by an 8-to-1 margin.

I’ve had one broker tell me it’s just for SEO – get the phones ringing.

Of course, if a company markets that it offers a guaranteed-rate jet card but is only trying to convince you that you are better off with dynamic pricing, it may make sense to take a step back.
