The NATO phonetic alphabet, formally known as the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, assigns a specific word to each letter.
If you fly privately, you’ve probably heard pilots, flight crews, or aviation professionals use words such as Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo when communicating.
It’s not aviation jargon meant to confuse passengers. Instead, the standardized system helps prevent confusion.
The NATO phonetic alphabet, formally known as the International Radiotelephony Spelling Alphabet, assigns a specific word to each letter of the alphabet. Instead of saying “M-I-A,” for example, a pilot can say “Mike-India-Alpha.” Teterboro Airport’s TEB becomes “Tango-Echo-Bravo.”
Why bother?
In aviation, communications often take place over radios where static, background noise, accents, and poor reception can make similar-sounding letters difficult to distinguish. “D” and “E” can easily sound alike. “Delta” and “Echo” are much harder to confuse.
The alphabet used today has a history stretching back nearly a century.
An internationally recognized spelling alphabet appeared in 1927, followed by multiple revisions and the World War II-era Able Baker alphabet.
The system that aviation professionals recognize today emerged in the 1950s, with the International Civil Aviation Organization playing a key role in developing a universal standard.
And there are a few quirks.
For example, it’s officially Alfa, not Alpha, and Juliett gets two t’s.
Even numbers have standardized pronunciations, including “Tree” for three, “Fife” for five, and “Niner” for nine.
